             Nicotine is a poisonous alkaloid found in tobacco leafs and vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes.Nicotine is addictive and that's why most of the smokers and tobacco chewers find it hard to quit their bad habits.Nicotine has stimulating affect on our brain.In small amount it stimulates autonomic nervous system , whereas large amount causes paralysis of the autonomic ganglia.

            By stimulating the brain, it increases the rate of metabolism, therefore, most smokers seem older than they really are.It may also increase the melanin production by the skin.It is also said that it increases the growth hormone secretion in man and opposite of that in rats.

           Nicotine increases AVP release from the kidneys which is responsible for antidiuresis (reduced formation of urine). Nicotine causes insomnia and anorexia nervosa if it is taken in large amounts as in chain-smoking or large intake of tobacco leafs.So, most of the smokers and tobacco chewers lose their appetite and lose their weight as aconsequence.Therefore, if you're a smoker and if you stop smoking, you're sure to gain weight.

         Nicotine's mood-altering effects ,causing a release of glucose from the liver and epinephrine (adrenaline) from the adrenal medulla, it causes stimulation.Feelings of relaxation, calmness, and alertness are its psychologic effects. It is even reported to produce a mildly euphoric state.Sudden withdrawal can result in such withdrawal  symptoms as trembling of the hands, irritation, anxiety, insomnia.
